We want to live in a better environment. That's why we apply rigorous statistical thinking to the decisions that shape the natural world around us. Sound statistics tell you how certain, or uncertain, you can be about a result. That clarity improves decision-making at every stage.
Better statistics. Better understanding. Better environment.
Our Purpose
Who We Work With
We work with people and organisations who recognise they need expert statistical capability, or extra capacity, to reach their goals. Our clients value statistically robust data and analysis applied to real ecological and environmental questions.
- Environmental and ecological consultancies
- Government agencies and departments
- Conservation NGOs and trusts
- Private companies in mining, fisheries, and renewable energy
- Research institutions and universities
Our Story
Proteus has helped organisations around the world strengthen the statistical rigour of their wildlife, ecological, and environmental studies since 2000.
People working in these fields often need to make important decisions from limited or imperfect data. Without statistical expertise, this can lead to overconfident conclusions, studies that don't withstand scrutiny, and conservation programmes that struggle to demonstrate their impact.
We've worked on hundreds of projects with environmental consultancies, government agencies, NGOs, and private sector clients. Our work spans conservation, natural resource management, renewable energy, and ecological research, helping clients understand their ecosystems and evaluate the risks their projects face.
Nature and numbers. That’s what drove Darryl MacKenzie and David Fletcher when they founded Proteus, and that’s what still drives us today.
Our Approach
We work alongside you, not just for you, on the gnarly problems in data collection and analysis.
Bringing in a biometrician or quantitative ecologist can improve your results. But what's possible is always shaped by the data you have and how it was collected. Complex analysis can produce impressive graphs and detailed maps. If the underlying data has fundamental issues, though, the conclusions may not hold up.
That's why we prefer to partner with you across the full life of a project. We help with problem formulation, data collection protocols, sample size, choice of analysis, and how results feed into your decisions. Skipping any of these stages tends to cause the same problems: disjointed approaches, delays, disengaged stakeholders, and budget overruns.
