Kangaroo Density Estimates in National Parks

Kangaroo stands alone

Client: Parks Victoria, Australia

A long-term monitoring programme needed reliable kangaroo population estimates across three national parks, but raw sighting counts were affected too heavily by habitat, survey effort, and detection differences to be trusted on their own.

We used survey data to estimate kangaroo density across each park, accounting for detection differences by species and area, and tracked population trends over a decade of involvement. Several years into the programme, we also redesigned the survey routes to improve the precision and efficiency of ongoing monitoring.

Outcome: We produced reliable density estimates with confidence intervals for each park, giving Parks Victoria a robust basis for tracking population trends over time.

Method: Line transect distance sampling, applied across a decade of repeat surveys.
