Data Analysis

Choosing the right method of analysis, and applying it correctly, to answer your "simple" question is as much an art as a science. This is where our statistical expertise comes to the fore. We match the method to your specific question and your data, whether you need to estimate abundance or density, track species distributions over time, understand community composition, identify the drivers of a species' ecology, or project future population viability.

We're experienced in common approaches like linear regression and generalised additive models (GAM), less common approaches, and specialise in:

- Occupancy modelling — species presence, accounting for imperfect detection and false absences

- Mark-recapture — abundance, survival, and recruitment, from marked and re-sighted individuals

- Distance sampling — abundance and density where detection declines with distance from the observer

- Population modelling — projecting future population size under different scenarios

- Bayesian approaches — incorporating prior information to support more complex models

If the method you need doesn't exist yet, we'll develop one.

Analysis works best when it's planned alongside your survey design, giving you a clear, efficient path from data collection through to results. Occasionally though you don’t realise you need help until partway through, or after the fact. Either way, if you need help, get in touch.

Projects

  • Survey Design

Having representative, robust and sufficient data is fundamental to making reliable decisions and conclusions about the natural world.

  • Data Analysis

Identifying an appropriate method of analysis can be challenging, let alone actually doing it!

  • Expert Review

Sometimes you just need another perspective, or another pair of eyes, to look things over.

  • Risk and impact assessments

Many ecosystems face potential impacts from natural events and human activities.

  • Training

If you’re looking to build your team's statistical capabilities, we can help.
